WEBVTT
00:00:09.160 --> 00:00:12.360
MONUMENTAL HISTORY
OF MODERN-DAY SPAIN
00:00:33.600 --> 00:00:37.680
On this day, with the red army
captive and disarmed,
00:00:38.440 --> 00:00:41.000
national troops have achieved
00:00:41.360 --> 00:00:43.760
their latest military objectives.
00:00:44.560 --> 00:00:47.120
The war is over.
00:01:00.760 --> 00:01:04.480
Illustrious lives:
Generalissimo Franco.
00:01:05.880 --> 00:01:07.360
He was born in Ferrol,
00:01:07.880 --> 00:01:11.480
which is why the town is now known
as Ferrol del Caudillo.
00:01:11.640 --> 00:01:15.880
Franco always led
his brave legionnaires,
00:01:16.240 --> 00:01:21.000
galloping
on his gracious white horse.
00:01:21.600 --> 00:01:26.000
He loves Spanish children because he
is a very brave and a very good man.
00:01:26.200 --> 00:01:29.200
All of you, upon waking up
and before getting into bed,
00:01:29.560 --> 00:01:33.920
must say this very short prayer:
00:01:34.320 --> 00:01:37.840
\"God, I love Spain very much!
00:01:38.240 --> 00:01:41.240
God, I love...
00:01:41.520 --> 00:01:44.240
...Generalissimo Franco very much!\"
00:01:56.160 --> 00:01:57.960
It is with profound sentiment
00:01:59.040 --> 00:02:01.440
that I read
the following announcement:
00:02:02.520 --> 00:02:05.720
\"20th November, 1975.
00:02:07.080 --> 00:02:09.520
The Civil and Military Houses
00:02:10.120 --> 00:02:12.960
informed at 5:25
00:02:13.920 --> 00:02:16.920
that officiating doctors
had announced
00:02:17.760 --> 00:02:19.680
that
His Excellency the Generalissimo
00:02:20.080 --> 00:02:23.360
has just died due to cardiac arrest
00:02:23.920 --> 00:02:28.160
ending the course of toxic shock
brought upon by peritonitis.\"
00:02:56.480 --> 00:02:57.480
Sir,...
00:02:58.960 --> 00:03:02.360
...do you swear
before God and the Holy Gospel
00:03:03.320 --> 00:03:06.520
to obey and uphold
the fundamental laws of the Kingdom
00:03:07.480 --> 00:03:12.280
and to be loyal to the principles
that inform the National Movement?
00:03:12.440 --> 00:03:13.720
King Juan Carlos I:
00:03:13.880 --> 00:03:16.600
I swear
before God and the Holy Gospel
00:03:16.920 --> 00:03:20.240
to obey and uphold
the fundamental laws of the Kingdom
00:03:20.680 --> 00:03:24.560
and to be loyal to the principles
that inform the National Movement.
00:03:37.280 --> 00:03:41.400
At this very moment, polling
stations are opening across country
00:03:41.560 --> 00:03:44.160
save for the Canary Islands,
where they\'ll open 1 hour later.
00:03:44.720 --> 00:03:49.120
Close to 24 million citizens may
cast their vote between 9am and 8pm
00:03:49.440 --> 00:03:51.760
to decide if they do
or do not approve
00:03:51.920 --> 00:03:54.120
of the constitutional project.
00:03:54.280 --> 00:03:58.000
With the effort of all Spaniards
I envisage an optimistic future,
00:03:58.840 --> 00:04:01.320
democratic consolidation,
00:04:02.280 --> 00:04:05.800
the complete exercise of sovereignty
by the Spanish people.
00:04:06.760 --> 00:04:08.640
At this time of night,
00:04:08.800 --> 00:04:12.160
and according to the data
that’s been announced,
00:04:12.440 --> 00:04:15.800
it is clear
that PSOE (Spanish Socialist Party)
00:04:16.040 --> 00:04:19.000
has been backed by the majority
00:04:19.160 --> 00:04:21.520
of the Spanish people
in this election.
00:04:22.320 --> 00:04:23.640
Good evening to all.
00:04:27.240 --> 00:04:29.800
PP (Popular Party)
has won the election.
00:04:30.960 --> 00:04:35.360
Tonight,
I commit to lead in quiet change.
00:04:36.280 --> 00:04:39.600
I promise to govern for all
with humility
00:04:40.760 --> 00:04:44.280
and I assure you
power will not change me.
00:04:45.520 --> 00:04:46.720
Today is a day...
00:04:47.920 --> 00:04:51.040
Today is a day to rejoice.
00:04:51.560 --> 00:04:53.520
but I’d like to tell you something:
00:04:53.880 --> 00:04:58.480
tomorrow morning I will already
be back here, working.
00:06:45.120 --> 00:06:48.360
